MythBusters, Snopes, and Lie Detectors: Getting to the Truth about Pelvic Health

Updated: Feb 4

September 2021

What do they have in common? They all work to find the truth and set the record straight. Finding truth is a monumental task, even in the world of pelvic health. I am realizing there are so many misconceptions about pelvic function and pelvic physical therapy that I just wanted to take a moment to set the record straight.

It is NOT normal to leak urine after you have had a baby.

Pain with sex is NOT something you have to just put up with.

Kegels are NOT the answer to every pelvic problem.

Pooping once or twice a week is NOT normal.

Squeezing your butt cheeks is NOT the same as a pelvic floor contraction.

Kegels are NOT the only thing we do in pelvic physical therapy.

Magnifying glass
What is really true about pelvic health?

Pelvic function IS complicated.

It DOES involve your urinary system, your gastrointestinal system, your reproductive system, and your respiratory system.

It DOES impact on your emotional and mental well-being.

Your pelvic floor muscles DO respond to input from your bowel, your bladder, your hormones, your eyes and ears, your lungs, and your feet.

The pelvis IS very much at the core of who we are.

Pelvic floor therapists CAN use a variety of techniques to help you address issues with pelvic function.

And that’s no lie!!
